How do i make a tall PVC flagpole for tailgating?
I want to make a PVC portable flagpole to take to the races and football tailgates. It needs to be atleast 20 feet high. Detailed directions would be great. thanks
I think if you use a single long piece of PVC pipe, or shorter sections coupled (presumably un-glued so you can disassemble), that it will be too flexible to survive a moderate breeze.
If you really want to make it out of PVC pipe, you might be better off making a "tripod" structure. That can probably be done using smaller diameter pipe, maybe 1/2".
The base would need to be constructed as either a square using 90 degree elbows, or an octagon using 45's. At three places you'd need to insert slip tees for the vertical members to attach to. The purpose of the base would be to allow you to sandbag it (don't want this thing landing on someone or their vehicle, unless you like some pre-game fighting to get your adrenaline pumping!).
The top end of the verticals could be tied together "easel" fasion, just line them up and drill straight through the pipes about an inch or two from the end and slip a 1/4"-20 screw through all three - use an nylon-insert "aircraft" nut to allow it to be loose but not come easily unbolted. You could leave one of the three pipes longer to have something to attach the flag to. Assuming your tripod doesn't have a wide base, at 20' tall, the angle shouldn't be too far off the vertical.
In all cases, slip joints that aren't glued should be drilled and have a 1/4"-20 screw of an appropriate length to lock the joint together (think "wind").
Now, are you sure you don't want to just get or build one of those blower doo-dads that inflates a thin fabric tube that waves around and attracts attention? The benefit is they're easy to carry and deploy and quick to break down at game time. If you built your own, you'd need to experiment with a 12V blower, lightweight fabric and a sewing machine. Depending on how long you want this thing to run, you mght also need a spare deep-discharge battery (or booster cables).
